Iran’s semi‑official Fars News Agency, citing documents obtained from Iran’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, reported that Iran has launched a Bitcoin‑backed shipping insurance service for shipping companies seeking passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Dubbed “Hormuz Safe”, the service is projected by the Iranian government to generate more than USD 10 billion in revenue for the country, though no specific time frame or operational details were disclosed.
Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz since the United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on February 28. The waterway is a vital artery for global energy supplies and other cargo shipments. Since then, the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have sought to institutionalize control over the strait, including imposing tolls and other fees, and the insurance service may serve as an additional fundraising measure.
