A study by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, based on 11 years of data, shows that the Bitcoin network would not suffer large-scale node disconnections even if 72%–92% of transnational submarine communication cables were cut simultaneously.
The study analyzed 68 real-world submarine cable failures and found that 87% of them affected fewer than 5% of nodes.
However, the study warns that risks rise significantly if attackers target critical infrastructure. For instance, targeting the five largest node hosting providers — Hetzner, OVH, Comcast, Amazon, and Google Cloud — affecting only about 5% of routing capacity could deliver a major shock to the network.
