The US Department of the Treasury is investigating whether cryptocurrency trading platforms and related infrastructure have been used to assist Iran in evading sanctions, with its enforcement focus shifting from individual wallets to 'service layer' systems such as exchanges, stablecoin channels and liquidity hubs. As Iran's annual cryptocurrency trading volume is estimated to reach $8 billion to $10 billion, the US has imposed sanctions on cryptocurrency exchanges operating within Iran's financial system for the first time, with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury adding the relevant platforms to the sanctions list. Regulators hold that the key to cracking down on sanctions evasion lies in cutting off liquidity and capital channels, rather than targeting only individual addresses.
